But not only can these photos help a person choose whether to book or not, they also present the first image they will see. You’ll always display the outside of your holiday property before showing them the inside, so these photos have an important role to play.

Fortunately, you can easily make sure you improve on your current skills by following the three tips below.

Don’t take photos in strong sunlight

In other words, avoid taking photos after 11am and wait until at least 3pm before attempting anything. When the sun is at its highest on a sunny day, you’ll struggle to make the light work for you. There is precious little in the way of shadows too, and that means you’ll find it hard to display your property in the best light (if you’d excuse the pun).

Either shoot early, or wait until after 3pm, and get the light behind you to make the most of your images.

Experiment with the horizon

Do you always take a photo with the horizon right through the middle of the shot? It may be doing you a disservice. You might just be surprised at how much more powerful a photo can be if you raise or lower the horizon a bit.

The great thing about camera phones or modern DSLR cameras is that they allow you to take as many shots as you like without worrying about wasting film. Make sure you do so, and adjust the level of the horizon in each one. Experiment with the focal point too – the main point each photo focuses on. Small changes like these can lead to big results.

Experiment with angles

Don’t simply take a photo of your holiday let property straight on. Try some different angles. Basically, if you’ve never taken a photo standing in a specific spot before, try it. See what happens.

The first thing you’ll notice is that taking a photo while standing directly in front of or behind your property is that the resulting image can look flat. If you stand off to one side, you’ve suddenly got some impressive angles to look at and work with. This can add great depth to your image. When you add this to the adjustment of the horizon and a weaker light adding longer shadows to your image, you could be onto a winner.

By putting all three elements into play – you’ll notice how they all work nicely together – you could well end up enjoying a much better set of photos to put on your holiday let website. Even if you aren’t a beginner, applying these different elements can change the whole look of your pictures.

A photo can be good but it won’t necessarily grab the attention. Furthermore, you will find some simple changes put it in an entirely different light – sometimes quite literally.

Do you struggle to take beautiful photos of the exterior of your holiday rental property?
